Transition to high school
Starting high school is an exciting milestone for students and families. Moving from Year 6 to Year 7 can feel like a big change. We help every child feel confident and supported during the transition to high school.

What to expect in high school
High school brings new experiences and routines, including:
- a larger school with more subjects, teachers and classrooms
- a timetable with 5 different lessons each day
- moving between classrooms and carrying books and equipment
- more independence and responsibility for homework and study
- new friendships and opportunities to join activities and clubs
- Specialist facilities: Science labs, Wood and Metal work rooms, Kitchens, Art Rooms, STEM Maker spaces, Gyms, Music rooms, Dance and Drama studios
- Opportunities for Academy classes in STEM, Sports and Creative Industries
- HPGE opportunities in Zenith and Aurora, Robotics, Public Speaking, Debating, Academic and Artist competitions, Bands, ensembles and musicals
Before your child starts Year 7
Enrolment
Before your child begins, families may be asked to meet with our Wellbeing team in Term 3 or 4. This is a time to share further details regarding:
- medical conditions or allergies
- family circumstances that may affect your child’s start
- any learning or wellbeing needs.
We will also explain the supports our school provides, such as:
- support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through personalised learning pathways
- extra support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
- support for students with disability or other learning needs through inclusive education programs.

Our transition program
High schools work closely with local primary schools to help students feel ready. Our transition to high school programs help Year 6 students get ready for Year 7. Activities may include:
- Open Nights in Term 1 of Year 6 - tour our campuses, meet our staff and students, enjoy taster lessons and classroom visits
- Year 6 into 7 Orientation day (Term 4)
- Parent information sessions
- iExplore - enhanced transition visits for students who may require these (Term 4)
- Peer support activities with older students.
- Wellbeing, teacher and Year Adviser visits to our local public schools to familiarise students with key staff and learn about moving to our College.
Transition from Year 3 to 5
- Year 3 Agriculture and Science Discovery Day
- Year 4 Sports Day with College students supporting training and games
- Year 5 and 6 Invitation to perform in the College Musical and attend a matinee performance

Moving to high school
Is your child starting Year 7 next year?
Complete an Expression of Interest (EOI) to join our school community.
Year 7 orientation
This will take place in Term 4. Once confirmed, the date will be shared and will apply to all government high schools. Contact the College for more information.
Getting ready at home
You can help your child prepare by:
- talking positively about starting high school
- buying uniforms, shoes, stationery and school supplies
- checking if a laptop or device is needed
- practising their travel route to school
- making sure they know your phone number and emergency contacts
- encouraging routines such as packing their school bag
- encouraging them to check their timetable and school bell times the night before day 1 of Term 1.
