Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.

Mindsets for learning
Lake Cathie Public School uses the 'Mindsets for Learning' to support, explicitly teach and guide student's emotional and social development. The 6 different mindsets each include 3 different 'I can' statements that outline to students the behaviour and thinking required to demonstrate this specific mindset.

Fire fair rules
At Lake Cathie Public School students are expected to follow the Five Fair Rules. These are consistent across the school and are visible in all learning settings.

Zones of regulation
At Lake Cathie Public School, we implement The Zones of Regulation, a widely recognised social-emotional learning program designed to help students understand and manage their emotions. This approach supports the development of self-regulation—also known as self-control, impulse management, or emotional regulation—by teaching students how to recognise their emotional states and use appropriate strategies to return to a calm, focused, and ready-to-learn mindset.
Self-regulation is the ability to manage emotions and behaviours in response to a given situation. For instance, children need higher energy levels during physical activity, like sports, and a calmer state when focusing in a classroom or library. Everyone, including adults, can struggle with strong emotions such as anger, anxiety, or fatigue, which can impact daily functioning and learning.
Through explicit teaching across all year levels, we equip our students with practical strategies to manage these feelings. This empowers them to face challenges, persist with difficult tasks, and build resilience. By learning these skills early, children are better prepared for future success and less likely to rely on negative coping mechanisms that may affect their wellbeing.
Our goal is to support students in becoming confident, capable, and emotionally healthy individuals—both now and in the future.
